The problem with today’s CO₂ supply chain is that none of the sources of supply align with the environmental goals we have as a society.
The CO₂ sources for the majority of today’s commercial supply are releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere that would have otherwise remained sequestered. These sources include mining and extracting CO₂ from underground deposits (similar to how we extract fossil fuels) or result from fossil fuel processing (e.g. ammonia production).
The other main source of today’s CO₂ supply, ethanol production, is no longer viable in a net-zero world, as we shift from gasoline-powered cars to electric vehicles. It is also not supportive of a more sustainable world, as the production of ethanol reduces the land that would otherwise be available for food production.
